getting ready for winter

in november, i visited some movie premieres and reviewed two of them for the gap – one was “The Art of Flight” by curt morgan, the other one was the freeski film festival in vienna.
i really enjoyed both nights. here is my review of “The Art of Flight” and here is the review of the freeski film festival.

also in november, i bought a splitboard including skins and crampons, aswell as a bivvy sac and new poles. i spent a lot of money on this setup, but after trying it out 3 times, i can already say that it was well worth it for sure. okay, i haven’t had to try out the bivvy sac so far, luckily ;)
i got the k2 panoramic in 158 cm. normally i ride a 148 jib board, so i was a bit anxious that it might be strange to ride a longer board, but – hell no – it felt pretty much just like the 148 k2 vavavoom that i own. also, i didn’t know if it would be stiffer or noodlier than my jib board, being split in the middle and all, but actually it’s a bit more stable… with less pop of course, but more float aswell :)

i’m very happy with my choice and i’m looking forward to touring a lot with it. so far, we hiked a bit in october, where we spent 2 days on the kitzsteinhorn, to get a feeling for our equipment and check out how it all works and how it works best. we also hiked up the veitsch (styria, nearly 2000 metres) and enjoyed knee deep powder there aswell.

hiking up the veitsch
on the veitsch i also got my first core-shot… haha, didn’t take as long to happen as i thought it would. i went over a rock, thought “oh, a shark”, but i didn’t think it was that serious because i didn’t fall or hit the rock really hard. when i checked out the base of my board at the parking lot at the end of the day, i had to notice that the rock had scratched through the base and that the core was visible.

but since i visited a wax workshop recently, i know a lot more about repairing and servicing boards. we repaired & serviced our boards today, which means, we’re all set for hiking tomorrow and on tuesday.
we have not decided which mountain we are going to pay a visit to, we will have to check out some conditions reports first, but i’m sure we’ll find something in the lower austrian / styrian alps.

i’ll keep you updated! so long, farewell!

Friday Night Skating

i was trying out a new Go Pro tripod and filmed myself a bit.

Ladies Longboard Workshop Vienna Recap

on tuesday, the 13th of september, a group of women gathered at 5pm at the donauinsel in vienna for the ladies longboard workshop organized by fee bücheler from huegelherzblut. fee and her partner in crime, sophie friedel, were supported by sixxa, les ettes and smile at your sister.

after saying hello to everyone, we started a short but efficient warm up routine. then, everyone geared up, refilled water bottles and got ready to go. we crossed the bridge and rolled along the danube for some time, so fee and sophie got a chance to check out our riding – how secure we were, if everyone was able to push and to footbrake and so on.

afterwards, we split into 2 groups – one group worked on the more basic assets needed for longboarding like a proper pushing technique and secure footbraking. the other group went a bit uphill to practise turning as a means of speed control and the first steps towards sliding. we got good advice from our coaches and i think everyone learned something that evening :)

time flew by and it was getting dark already, when we stopped our sessions and got together for the final words and good byes. fee had a nice surprise for all the ladies – she brought goodie bags by les ettes, which included stuff like a sweet sixxa surprise, perfume by les ettes and an autographed poster of lisa filzmoser. a big thanks to fee and sophie for taking their time to teach us and ride together, it was a blast!

thanks to les ettes, sixxa and smile at your sister for the support! check out the gallery here! pics by nicole fleck, thanks for being our workshop photographer! also, read the following recaps aswell:

my first wakeboard contest

on the 24th of july, roman and me were helping out a bit with the organization of the austrian wakeboard cup tourstop in vienna. in the morning, we brought some speakers, a mixing desk, etc and started to build up everything.
after a while, austrian wakeboarder astrid schabransky approached me and asked if i wanted to participate in the open women category, since only herself and another girl were going to compete…
i had not planned to compete, because i’ve only been riding for about a year and so far, my trick repertoire isn’t really big. i didn’t practise for the comp or anything… but still i thought that i should give it a shot and try my luck, just for fun and to see what a wakeboard competition feels like.

luckily, i was able to nail at least SOME of my tricks (in the qualification… in the finals, not so much ;) ) and so i came in second – this came as a total surprise for me. thanks to the awc vienna for the awesome trophy and thanks to liquid force and corona for the nice goodies :D
i had an awesome day, even though the weather was absolutely horrible (cold, windy, rainy – lots of waves on the water).

next week, i will be attending a wakeboard camp in upper austria. i’m hoping for the summer to return for at least that week, because i guess camping in the rain won’t be lots of fun. i want to try new things and maybe learn one or two new tricks… i can see myself competing in other wakeboarding contests in the future, but for now, it’s all just for fun and i still have loads to learn.

bmx masters 2011 – a look back

at the beginning of july, the bmx masters took place in cologne, germany. roman and me flew over to cologne on the 7th of july and i took part in the competition on saturday the 9th. i was very nervous when we first got to the contest site, but we immediately met two other ladies who were there to compete, rebecca berg and vanessa gerner. when they said that the park was very crowded, they were right. since my knee had been in a not so good condition because of practising a lot beforehand, i decided it would be better to only check out the park quickly and then not ride until the day of the competition.

roman and me checked out cologne, we saw lots of churches and old stones ;)

i had expected to be super nervous on saturday, but in fact, i felt pretty okay. when i arrived at the park, i met angie marino from the usa and saw all the other girls that had traveled all around the world just to take part in this contest – suddenly i felt rather awesome :)
it was a special feeling to get to know everyone and to be able to ride with some of the best female bmx riders in the world. it was impressive to see everyone’s skills and i felt really little and unimportant, haha – but nevertheless, i enjoyed the contest a lot and much to my own surprise, i was able to nail every trick except one in my first run. the second run went rather good aswell. i messed up my best trick, but i hope at least my effort to be the crowd pleaser for a few seconds was successful.
it felt so strange yet awesome that people cheered for me… people i had never met before.

i loved that feeling! i was excited and calm at the same time and i enjoyed my stay in cologne so much more from saturday on!
after our competition, i ran over to the flatland area to see my friend julia preuss from berlin compete against monika hinz and aleksandrine neumueller – they all gave their best and julia came in second in the end.

i was delighted when i saw the results – i came in 7th, which is a very good result for me personally!
thanks cologne for having me and cheers to all the ladies that competed at the bmx masters! it was a pleasure to meet you, i hope this will not be a one-time-in-my-life experience! :)

here are some of my pictures from our trip. for more stuff (pics, videos, articles) on the bmx masters, please visit mizzi.at!
also, here is a posting by julia preuss and here is a posting by camila harambour!

bmx masters 2011

so, in a weak moment, i let my boyfriend convince me to sign up for the bmx masters. i’ve been thinking about going to the masters for years now and never had the guts to do it.
this year, i was sure that i wanted to go, but at first, i thought that i’d only go there to watch the contest and get to know the other girls.
well, somehow after some time i started to like the idea to compete there better and better. i signed up end of may. since that day, i’ve been thinking about the masters and riding my bike nearly constantly. first, it was more of a “shit, what have i gotten myself into? why am i doing this to me?”-feeling and i was more than nervous, but over time it turned out to be pretty motivating.
last year, i wasn’t as motivated to ride as i had been during the years before, so this was a welcome change.

i’ve been riding a lot again lately, i noticed that i’m not really as bad as i was thinking.
at the moment, i guess that i’m gonna do somewhat well in the contest… maybe i’m going to mess up all my tricks, maybe i’m going to be overly nervous and not able to think straight, maybe i’m gonna get hurt (just like on thursday when i slammed my bars into my ribcage)… but i don’t think i’ll make a fool out of myself. and that’s basically all i’m hoping for… this and having a really good time with new friends i will make at the masters.

so… here i come :)
looking forward to seeing everyone that i’ve so far only talked to on the interwebz!
